2014
Sprouts Family Daycare was founded in 2014 by sisters Caity & Ellen in Caity’s family home. Licensed by the state of Illinois as a group home daycare, Caity & Ellen cared for twelve children, including their own, ages 6 weeks to 6 years.
2019
In early 2019, Caity & Ellen were inspired to broaden the scope of Sprouts. The vision of a large outdoor area dedicated to nature and loose parts with an inviting indoor space for creating art was built and in January 2020 Sprouts Art & Nature School moved into the current location.

today
Today, Sprouts Preschool, still taught and directed by Caity & Ellen, uses an outdoor model. At Sprouts, children play, get dirty, run, imagine, create, build, talk, laugh, and sing – outside.
And Sprouts Art & Nature School has big things on the horizon: Sprouts Studio opened in 2025 to bring our community preschoolers nature, art, and yoga.
"Cheers to your first ten years running the best daycare/nature school around! We thank our lucky stars all the time to have found Sprouts for our daughter when she was so tiny - 9.5 years ago. Thank you for letting us be a part of your Sprouts family."

As the children & grandchildren of some of our area's great environmentalists, we (Caity & Ellen) were taught early on that conservation, sustainable living, and environmental stewardship were essential components of a life well-lived. Our passion is passing these values on to future generations.
At Sprouts, we strive to integrate accessible nature experiences into children's lives fostering a lifelong appreciation for and dedication to the natural world.
We aim to provide a sustainable example for the children in our care - learning about and practicing composting, recycling, and re-using. We discuss our human impact on nature and living things. We minimize plastic, use found objects as toys, and love the addition of a great cardboard box to be re-purposed on the playground - before adding it too to the compost pile.
We are fortunate to live in a community with similar values and commitment. Because we must work together as a community to ensure that upcoming generations inherit the resources, environment, and Earth they rightfully deserve, in addition to the knowledge of how to preserve it.
"Thank you for all you do for our kids and the entire Sprouts community. I can't imagine what we'd be like without you!"

Our pedagogy draws on our years of childcare experience, our educational backgrounds from the University of Illinois in Early Childhood Education, and is influenced by Montessori, Reggio, and Waldorf teachings as well as our mission.
At Sprouts, we are using art & nature as the foundation for learning, providing environments and projects that promote creativity and a love of nature, and offering extended uninterrupted play periods with open-ended materials for developing wild imaginations, independence, and confidence.
We believe this non-traditional alternative to typical preschool programs is the best possible first school experience there is.
